Manchester United have confirmed that the upcoming Premier League fixture with Sheffield United has been temporarily postponed.
United were due to welcome the side from South Yorkshire to Old Trafford on March 22, but it will have to be rescheduled due to Sheffield United’s progression in the FA Cup.
The Blades advanced past Championship side Reading with a 2-1 win after extra-time, courtesy of a Billy Sharp winner.
With the FA Cup quarter-finals scheduled to take place on the weekend of March 21, the game has had to be postponed before United have discovered whether they will be in the hat for the next round.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side face Derby County on Thursday night as they aim to win the prestigious trophy for the first time since 2016, while coming up against club legend Wayne Rooney.
Of course, if United do advance past the Rams then they could draw Sheffield United and face them anyway.
However, there isn’t much room for the Premier League fixture to be rearranged due to United’s fixture pile-up – especially if they reach the latter stages of both the Europa League and the FA Cup.
The original date of the game is the last weekend before the two-week break for internationals, and should United advance past Austrian side LASK in the Europa League, then they will be playing in the quarter-finals of the competition during the first two mid-weeks after the break: on April 9 and 16.
In fact, if United make it to the Europa League semi-finals, then they would only have one free mid-week, the week of April 20, for the rest of the season – which may be the week where the fixture against Sheffield United is rearranged to.
Advancement in the FA Cup could cause further issues, as if United reach the semi-finals then the scheduled trip to Aston Villa would also have to be postponed.
