A 36-year-old man, Khalid Lawal, who allegedly stole a Mack truck valued N12 million, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Lawal, whose address was not provided, is facing four counts bordering on stealing, conspiracy and forgery.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some other persons still at large on Oct. 30, 2020 at the Iddo Terminus, Ebute Meta, Lagos.

Olatunde said the defendant stole the truck belonging to the complainant, Obinna Ogbule.

He said that the defendant forged registration papers and also swore to an affidavit of ownership of the truck with registration No. KSF 598 XP.

Olatunde said the offences contravened Sections 85, 287, 363 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 provides two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

The Chief Magistrate, A.A. Oshoniyi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Oshoniyi ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until March 8 for mention.
