A 32-year-old man, Opaleye Farisu, Friday was docked before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly defrauding his neighbour of N220,000.
Farisu was charged with fraud and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Akpan Nko, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in November, 2021 at about 2.45 p.m, Opposite Fams Embassy, Ibereko, Badagry area of Lagos.
Nko said that the defendant allegedly collected the sum of N220,000 from his neighbour, Mohamed Sidi, under the pretence of selling a Volkswagen Vento Saloon car to him.
The prosecutor said that the defendant converted the money to his personal use.
“The defendant ran away from home for several months after collecting the money but was caught around Agbara in Lagos and handed over to Police,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 312 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Section 287 stipulates three years jail term for stealing.
Chief Magistrate Fadaunsi Adefioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adefioye held that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The chief magistrate adjourned the case until March 29, for mention.
