A 23-year-old man, Bidemi Akande, is being detained at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State for alleging killing one Francis Jibel, a commercial motorcyclist, and dispossessing him of his motorbike.
The incident happened on May 12, 2012 in at Ajah area of the state.
Luck ran out on the suspect when a vigilante group apprehended him following suspicion that the suspect stole a commercial motorcycle.
The vigilante group handed the suspect to the police that discovered Akande stole the motorbike after allegedly killing the owner along Mobil Road, Ajah.
The suspect said though he was high on marijuana when the incident happened, he did not kill Jibel.
He, however, admitted stealing the motorcycle, an offence he blamed on poverty.
“I was broke that fateful day and I saw this okada parked by the road side, this was about 7pm. So I took it. I accepted that I stole the bike but I did not kill the owner,” Akande said.
The Lagos State police spokesperson Joseph Jaiyeoba, confirmed the incident.
Jaiyeoba said: “Investigation is ongoing and as soon as we are through with our investigations, the suspect will be charged to court.”
