A 70-year-old man, identified simply as Baby Ijemo, has committed suicide inside his room at Olorombo area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The lifeless body of the septuagenarian was discovered by his co-tenants on Monday night following the stench emanating from his room-and-parlour apartment.
One of the neighbours, who did not want his name disclosed, told newsmen on Tuesday that the deceased had in recent time been hostile to his neighbours.
He said none of the neighbours could establish the reason for the suicide.
He said: “We began to perceive an offensive odour emanating from Baba’s room but the room was locked.
“Out of curiosity, we peeped through the window and discovered the dangling body of Baba with a rope tied round his neck and hung on the ceiling plank.
“We then raised alarm which attracted other people in the neighbourhood, and we quickly contacted the family members and the police.”
When contacted on phone by the News Agency of Nigeria, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.
Adejobi said: “I confirm that a man identified as Baba Ijemo committed suicide on Monday in Abeokuta.
“He did not leave any suicide note and we do not suspect any foul play.
“The man has been buried by his family members.
“We got the information very late but the commissioner of police has ordered an investigation into the matter.”
