How hundreds of lunatics and homeless persons, arrived Agbor, headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, remains a mystery to the inhabitants of the council area.
Their geometric increase has now constituted threat to the lives and property of residents in the locality, forcing them to raise the alarm over their presence.
The mentally sick persons were allegedly dumped by their kinsmen on Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway, around the bush, covering the popular Umunede community and Agbor town, after which they find their way into Agbor streets.
Their presence became worrisome on Sunday as one headed for a neatly packed Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV, Highlander), along Okoh Street, by the Old Lagos/Asaba Road junction, and hit the windscreen with a big stone.
The monumental increase in their number has now become a source of concern as residents in the locality wondered why they now walk aimlessly round the streets of Agbor, Umunede and the expressway with tattered clothes and bushy hairs and in most cases, naked.
A Managing Director of one of the Psychiatric Hospitals in the vicinity, Hon. Joseph Enumah, lamented the situation, describing it as “quite unfortunate”.
According to Enumah, most of the lunatics were brought in from neighboring states by their relatives, who, having spent huge sum of money to treat them but to no avail, could no longer withstand the stigma of been associated with madness.
He said again that they usually brought them like that to ostensibly create the impression that their cities were free of lunatics and beggars.
He said they usually dump them at Uromi Junction in Agbor at night from one of the neighbouring South-West states, even as he said he saw them on two occasions.
Enumah said: “Apart from constituting nuisance, their presence on the streets of Agbor and its environs have since posed serious threat to our corporate existence.
“Their presence recently assumed a dangerous dimension as they have started to express their madness in action and words on our lives and property.”
