Lubrication as a pleasure enhancer, by Tiwa Says

Change they say is the only constant, but not for these neighbours of mine, who are determined to be consistently unchanging.

How else would you explain their nightly show of screams and shouts, which is most unpalatable to the ears?

From all indications, it would appear that they are exercising their conjugal rights, but it doesn’t seem to be a pleasurable ordeal, especially for the woman, because her laments and screams echoes throughout the street at night.

This has been going on for years with this middle-aged couple. As long as I’ve been on the street. I wonder why something that is supposed to give pleasure, gives pain instead.

Two reasons come to mind though: It’s either the wife has a case of vaginismus, which makes sex very uncomfortable and painful, or maybe the husband does not indulge in foreplay before penetration, which can also make the sexual experience unpleasant because the vagina is dry and not ready to receive the penis.

Whatever the case, I have made a decision to have a talk with the woman. I know this is a very common occurrence between some couples hence why some women complain of not enjoying sex.

A case of vaginismus needs medical help. For the latter case though, some minutes of foreplay and lubrication is the sure solution.

The vagina is a sexual organ that normally self-lubricates, when a woman is sexually aroused. Intercourse without a lubricant can be painful and unsafe.

The female body may produce less lubricant as a result of hormonal changes, menopause, ageing or medication. That is usually where artificial lubricants come in.

Artificial lubricants can help enhance arousal, boost sexual pleasure, and reduce friction during penetration or even when using a sex toy.

Lubricants can be used by everyone, even if your  body produces lubrication naturally.

If you’re dealing with vagina dryness, you may want to consider using lubricants. Using lubricant before sexual activity can help prevent itching, burning and other discomfort.

Some of the causes of dryness are:

 – Medications: like antihistamines and antidepressants

 – Not drinking enough water

 – Breastfeeding

 – Cigarettes

 – Hormonal birth control

 – Menopause

 – Chemotherapy

There are lubricants that are designed to enhance sexual function and arousal. If you are looking to spice things up and try something new, these lubricants are a great idea.

There are different types of lubricants to suit different needs. It’s completely normal to have a favourite. Whatever your need though, there is a lubricant suitable for you.

Here are the different types of lubricants:

WATER-BASED LUBRICANT: This is the most common. And it comes in two varieties: with glycerin (this has a slightly sweet taste) or without glycerin.

As with every other type of lubricant, water-based lubricant has its pros and cons.

PROS: Natural feel, it’s non-staining, it’s great for vaginal sex, it’s great for condom and toy, safe, and cleans up easily.

CONS: Can become sticky or tacky as it dries, it evaporates quickly on skin so it needs to be reapplied more often.

SILICONE-BASED LUBRICANT: They are odourless and tasteless, slippery and smooth.

PROS: They last long, they won’t evaporate or absorb into the skin, they’re also condom-friendly.

CONS: They’re harder to wash off than water-based lubricants. Silicone-based lubricants can ruin silicone toys when not cleaned properly.

OIL-BASED LUBRICANT: There are two types of oil-based lubricants: Natural (like avocado oil, coconut oil or olive oil) and Synthetic (like mineral oil or Vaseline).

Oil-based lubricants are safe to use, not expensive, and they’re also easily accessible.

PROS: Natural-based oil lubricants are great for genital massages and sexual play. They’re also safe for the vagina and safe to eat. Synthetic oil-based lubricants are good for external masturbation.

CONS: Both natural and synthetic oil-based lubricants can destroy latex condoms, and stain fabrics. Synthetic products may irritate the vagina and could lead to a vaginal infection due to the fact that it can be difficult to clear out of the vagina.

There are some things to consider when choosing a lubricant

All lubricants are not created the same. Each lubricant serves a specific need. Some brands will work better for you than others, depending on your needs.

Here are a few tips:
– If you’re prone to yeast infections, avoid lubricants with glycerin. Glycerin can irritate your vagina and kill good bacteria, which might lead to an infection.

– If you’re dealing with dryness. “Warming” lubricants may not help, as they contain glycerin and can dry quickly. Long-lasting silicone lubricants are the best for you.

– If you’re going to use a condom, avoid oil-based lubricants. Oil-based lubricants destroy latex condoms.

– If you’re trying to conceive, go for a lubricant that says it’s “sperm-friendly” or “fertility-friendly” on its packaging.

– If you’re going to use a sex toy, use a water-based lubricant. If your sex toy is made of silicone, silicone-based lubricants can break down a toy’s rubber over time.

– If you’re going to play in the shower, opt for a silicone-based lubricant. Water-based products will rinse off as soon as you’re under the shower head.

Some ingredients found in some lubricants likely to cause inflammation or irritation, and should be avoided by those who are sensitive.

These ingredients include:
– glycerin

– nonoxynol-9

– propylene glycol

– chlorhexidine gluconate

Below are some side effects of using lubricants:
Most lubricants don’t have any side effects; however, it is possible to have an allergic reaction to something in the lubricant.

Seek medical help if you develop any of the following symptoms after use:

– Difficulty breathing

– Hives

– Itching

– Swelling, especially of the tongue, throat or face

– Rash.

Also see your doctor if you develop more frequent yeast infections when lubricant is a part of your regular routine.

Vaginal lubricants can be a great way spice up your sex life with your partner. Lubricants can reduce friction or discomfort, and help increase arousal.

When deciding between different lubricants, keep your comfort and safety in mind.

The amount you use and how long your lubricant lasts will determine whether or not you’re going to have any fun during sexual activity. With the wrong product, your vagina may feel irritated, and you do not want that.

Need I say more? Let’s go shopping for some lubricants this weekend.

I would love to get feedback, questions and recommendations on the topics you would want me to shed light on.
