Esther Lawal, Little Miss Nigeria Queen, on Tuesday solicited for the support of Kogi Government for her pet project on street children.
Lawal made the call during a sensitisation visit to the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Bolanle Amupitan, in her office in Lokoja.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 10-year-old Queen, from Lagos state, is a pupil of British Elite Standard Imperial School, Abuja.
According to Lawal, the pet project tagged: “Street-To-School Campaign”, is aimed at raising awareness on the plight of ‘out of school’ children in the country.
It also seeks stakeholders prompt action in taking these children off the streets and back to school.
Lawal said: “Every Nigerian child deserves quality education irrespective of social status; it is the responsibility of every government to ensure that children are properly educated and giving a chance to have a better life.
“We are the future of Nigeria; therefore, adequate priority must and should be given to us.”
Lawal, thank the commissioner for her warm reception and support to Kogi children, especially the less privileged and physically challenged ones.
She also commended the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, for his effort towards children’s welfare and well-being across the state.
Responding, the Commissioner thanked the Queen for the visit and promised to convey her message to the governor, adding that the government would give the necessary support to her advocacy project.
Amupitan said: “The leadership of Gov. Bello, place premium on children’s welfare, and education is one sector that we do not joke with.
“This government has carried out series of overhauling in the education sector, and has invested heavily in infrastructure.
“This visit coincides with the stakeholder’s summit on education which is a pointer to the fact that we are evolving a better educational system for our children.
“We will continue to do our best in ensuring that more children are enrolled in schools, and are given quality education.
“Our doors are always open for partnership in any program aimed at advancing the course of our children.”
Also speaking, Oladele John-Nihi, Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, in Kogi, said the commissioner’s gesture of receiving the queen in her office was highly appreciated.
John-Nihi said: “On behalf of the Little Miss Nigeria and her team, I say thank you ma for your humility and hospitality.
“We also appreciate your support and that of the State Government to the less privileged children in Kogi.’’
