Skeletal administrative operations have begun in some of the newly created local council development areas in Ekiti State, a check by the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday revealed.
Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State had on July 29 signed into law a bill passed by the state House of Assembly for the creation of 19 LCDAs.
This brings the number of the councils in Ekiti to 35 as against 16 before July 29.
Fayemi had justified the creation as a fulfillment of the yearnings of the people, saying that the exercise would bring government nearer to the people.
Council staff in Osi/Isokan in Ifaki, Ifelodun in Ilupeju, Ekiti North-East in Kota and Ajoni in Ayedun, told NAN that they had been redeployed from the mother local government areas.
They said that official work had begun for some people that came to the councils.
A worker, who preferred anonymity, commended the Fayemi administration for creating the new councils but said that workers were apprehensive that the incoming administration might not retain them.
The worker said: “The creation of the LCDAs is a thing of joy but who knows what the new administration will do when they take over in a few weeks.
“We hope that the incoming government will retain the existence of the LCDAs so that the grassroots in the state will develop rapidly.”
It was observed that renovation works were underway in some of the council areas.
In Ayedun and Kota, the workers were seen supervising carpenters and other artisans working on the structures.
The major road that led to the temporary office of Ifelodun LCDA in Ilupeju Ekiti had just been graded.
The situation was the same at the secretariat of Osi/Isokan council in Ifaki, with some workers loitering around the premises.
Efforts to speak with the LCDA chairmen was abortive because they had gone to the state capital on official assignments.
