The striking Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, Plateau State chapter on Tuesday sealed all entrances leading to the State House of Assembly Complex, thus disrupting the day’s sitting.
The staff said their action to block the main gate of the state House of Assembly was to demand for the release of their salary increment, which was approved alongside the 2016 Budget.
Consequently, the Speaker, Rt Hon. Peter Azi, with the 24 other members have gone into hiding, abandoning their offices for fear of unpalatable consequences, even as the demonstrating staff embarked on a sit down protest.
However, efforts to speak with Azi proved abortive as his phone could not be reached.
The Chairman of PASAN, Comrade Vatis Hakuri, said the striking workers have not been paid.
Hakuri said when the union solicited for the help of the Head of Service and Accountant General of the state, they were insulted.
They equally said there was no fund to pay such money.
He said: “The Accountant General’s utterances triggered the anger of members to embark on indefinite strike to press for the demand of their payment.”
He was quoted as having said: “Even if your union cuts off my neck, I won’t implement that new policy.”
