The Lagos State Government and the Association of Waste Managers in the state, operating under the Private Sector Participation programme, have resolved their differences outside the court.
The wastes managers, under The Incorporated Trustees of Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, had dragged the Lagos State Government to court over a new initiative that would have seen them thrown out of business.
The waste managers, numbering about 350, had filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square, challenging their sacking by the state.
However, on Tuesday, the operators told the court hearing the suit that their differences with the Lagos State Government had been resolved.
The counsel for the PSP waste managers, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, told the presiding Judge, Taofiquat Oyekan-Abdullahi, that the dispute leading to the case with the state had been settled.
Adegboruwa said with the intervention of the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, the face-off had been resolved.
He said about 213 of the PSP waste managers have been absorbed into the new waste management scheme: “Cleaner Lagos Initiative.”
Adegboruwa said the details of the terms of settlement were being worked out.
He said it would be filed before the court when ready.
The Counsel for the state, S. A. Quadri, said the government was committed to an amicable resolution of the dispute.
Justice Oyekan-Abdullahi encouraged the parties to follow through with the out-of-court settlement.
She said the court would be willing to adopt the terms of the settlement.
The case was adjourned till October 26, 2017.
The waste managers had prayed the court to restrain the state government from managing solid wastes in the state through a foreign company, Visionscape Group, which is operating in partnership with two Nigerian companies – Visionscape Sanitation Solutions Limited and ABC Solutions Limited.
