The Lagos League of Political Parties has commended the Justice Ade Owobiyi-led tribunal of the Lagos State Local Government Election Petitions Tribunal that declared the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Busari Akande, as the validly elected chairman of Agbado Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of the state.
The LLPP in a statement on Sunday by its Chairman, Udoka Udeogaranya, said the Justice Owobiyi panel judgment is in consonance with the wishes of the people of the local government area, urging the judiciary to continue to live up to expectations.
The LLPP said the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission is due for dissolution with its failure to meet up with the standard expected of an independent umpire.
Udeogaranya added: “Once again after the landmark judgment on Ikoyi/Obalende LCDA election petition, the Lagos State Local Government Election Petitions Tribunal has lived up to expectations of the Lagos State electorate with this quintessential verdict, that ordered the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to immediately issue a certificate of return to the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Busari Akande.
“It is to our view that this merited order must not be delayed by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, who in the last local council election proves to be suffering from democratic inanition and was long over due for dissolution.
“We congratulate the chairman-elect, Busari Akande and we extol his faith in the rule of law, encourage his uncommon civility and urge him to maintain perseverance through the appeal.
“LLPP counsels that the judiciary has an expedient role to play in creating a harmonious political environment that often eludes African societies after elections. It is worthy to note that justice delayed is justice denied and the surest way of minimizing political violence, election rigging, and achieve subjecting politicians on the part of rule of law and peace, is to ensure that election petitions are treated meritoriously, but most importantly in a timely manner that would give hope to expeditious recovering of a stolen mandate or dissipation of false claims by politicians whose sole intention is to create disorder.”
