Lagos BRT accident: We are sorry for misinformation – FRSC

There were different versions of the news that made the rounds on Monday across Nigeria that a fully loaded Bus Rapid Transit bus owned by the Lagos State Government plunged into the lagoon in Lagos State.
While a version on the social media stated that the bus plunged into the lagoon off the Third Mainland Bridge, another version had it that more than 20 passengers on board the BRT escaped death by the whiskers after their bus lost control and skidded off the bridge at the Ebute-Ero area of the state.
“Luckily the bus was prevented by the rails blockage from plunging into the river so the bus did not fall into the lagoon,” one version of the story said.
The news about the accident was further compounded when the Federal Road Safety Commission said in a tweet that the BRT bus actually plunged into the lagoon.
The FRSC, however, later retweeted, admitting it gave false information about the BRT accident.
The FRSC, through Jonas Agwu, expressed regrets in a tweet that it misled Nigerians with the news.
Agwu said the tweet should be “disregarded.”
Also the Lagos State Police Command was unable to provide information on the accident as the spokesperson for the Command, Ngozi Braide, said she did not get any brief on the incident.
Also, efforts to get the reactions of the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Service, the agency in charge of the BRT, proved abortive as officers said they were not aware of any accident.
