World lightweight powerlifting record-holder, Esther Oyeama, says lack of facilities is hindering her preparation for the defence of her title at January’s World Para-Powerlifting Championships in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Oyema won the gold medal in the women’s lightweight category at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April, setting a world record.
“Training for me has become a nightmare due to lack of facilities,” she said while speaking with NAN on Monday in Abuja.
Onyeama added: “We have no training facilities in Edo and instead of staying idle, I do lots of press-up exercises to keep my arms strong, as well as visit gym centres.
“The facilities at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin are not very good and can injure athletes. So, I don’t often go there.
“There are good facilities in Lagos, but I can’t be in Lagos all the time.’’
The 36-year-old para-athlete then appealed for the sponsorship of her training programme in Lagos where the best of facilities were available.
She said this would enable her to rigorously and constantly train and shape up ahead of the championships.
She said: “Living in Lagos is quite expensive in terms of accommodation, feeding and all. So, I will need sponsors to help me achieve a bigger feat in my own country at the world championships next year.”
NAN reports that she won the award in the para-athlete category of the 2018 Nigeria Sports Awards in Lagos on Saturday.
