Mohammed Bashir, the Technical Officer, Borno State Sports Council, on Saturday said lack of funds had impeded the state from participating in the ongoing North East Zonal U-17 Sports Festival in Bauchi.
Bashir told the News Agency of Nigeria in Bauchi that “the state government could not approve the money requested for Team Borno to participate in the tournament”.
He said the Borno State Sports Council had mobilised a formidable contingent that could have excelled in at least five major events, but lamented that lack of funds thwarted their efforts.
He said: “We had during our preparations set up three training camps each in the state at Low Cost, MMC, Jere, Mafa and Kunduga.
“Each centre had produced eight teams to feature in specific events; this was the contingent we prepared for the festival but lack of funds thwarted our efforts.
“We have the best Beach, Hockey and Cricket teams in the country; our beach team participated in the African Games in Egypt and represented the country in China this year.
“We are equally proud of the volleyball team that we would have fielded in both male and female categories.”
