A Minna, Niger State Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced a labourer, Suleiman Saleh, 25, to seven years imprisonment for defiling a six-year-old girl.
The Chief Magistrate, Maimuna Abubakar, sentenced the labourer after he pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with the minor.
Abubakar said: “After listening to his plea for leniency, the court will not be fair if adequate punishment is not meted to Saleh to serve as deterrent to others.”
She then sentenced Saleh to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine.
Prosecutor Gunduma Ibrahim had told the court that the father of the victim, a resident of Sarkin Pawa, reported the matter to the police in December 2013.
Ibrahim said the convict had carnal knowledge of the minor without her consent and confessed committing the crime during investigation.
He said that the offence contravened Section 32 (2) of the Child Rights Law of Niger State
When the charge was read to the convict, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.
The prosecutor, thereafter, applied that the convict be tried summarily in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
