Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has promised to support Kwara Falcons, the state’s club in the 2013/2014 DSTV Men’s Premier Basketball League, to enable it honour its obligations.
A statement on Thursday by the Media Officer of Nigeria Basketball Federation, Patrick Omorodion, said Ahmed made the pledge when the federation’s President, Tijani Umar, paid him a courtesy visit.
Omorodion quoted Ahmed as saying: “I am delighted at the team’s recent promotion to the basketball premiership.
“I am promising the club a 32-seater bus and we will also place the team on a sustainable funding path to enable it honour its obligations.”
The statement added that the governor also disclosed the state government’s plan to explore a public-private partnership to renovate the Kwara Stadium.
Ahmed said: “We will explore a public-private partnership initiative to renovate and upgrade the facilities in the Indoor Sports Hall of the stadium and the athletes’ hostel as well.
“This is to give the team a befitting home and camp, as well as attract national and international tournaments back into Kwara.”
The statement also quoted Umar as appealing to the governor to invest in grassroots basketball development for the sport to grow in the state.
Kwara Falcons had alongside Gombe Bulls gained promotion to the basketball premier league for the 2013/2014 season.
