The Chairman of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, Dr. Uthman Ajidagba, on Saturday described the local government election in 15 councils of the state as peaceful and orderly.
Ajidagba made the statement in Afon, headquaters of the Asa Local Government Area, after monitoring the voting in five local government areas of the state.
The five local government areas visited by the chairman were: IIorin-West, IIorin-East, IIorin-South, Asa and Ifelodun.
He said he was impressed by the large turnout of voters in all polling centres visited in the five councils.
The chairman also expressed satisfaction with the orderly manner the voters conducted themselves in all the wards visited.
Ajidagba said the election was a huge success, in terms of the provision of materials used for the exercise.
He said there was no record of shortage of electoral materials in all the 181 wards where elections took place.
Most polling stations recorded a large turnout of voters.
There was also the presence of uniformed security personnel, as well as those in mufti, in all the polling centres visited.
Some of the electoral officers described the election as orderly and peaceful, while the turnout was impressive.
They said there were no cases of inadequate supply of materials.
Some observers from within and outside the state also monitored the conduct of the election in several parts of the state.
The Kwara State Deputy Governor, Elder Peter Kisira, on Saturday expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the local government elections in the state.
Kisira told newsmen at unit 10 of Ilesha-Baruba Ward in Baruten Local Government Area, where he voted, that the polls were peaceful and transparent.
Kisira commended the KWSIECfor “a job well done.”
Dr. Lafia Aliyu Kora-Sabi, the outgoing Chairman of the Baruten LGA, also said the conduct of the election was peaceful.
Kora-Sabi said in Yashikira that he was delighted and overwhelmed with the turnout of people in the area.
He condemned the call in some quarters to stop the state electoral bodies from conducting local government elections, saying they were “performing perfectly well.”
Former Senator Ahmed Mohammed also expressed satisfaction with the election, saying that people in Baruten LGA were known for being peaceful.
The Speaker of the Kwara House of Assembly, Hon. Rasaq Atunwa, on Saturday expressed satisfaction with the conduct of Saturday’s Local Government Election held in the 15 council areas of the state.
Atunwa made the observation at Efue-Berikodo in the Asa Local Government area of the state, after casting his vote.
He said: “I am highly impressed with the turnout of people to cast their votes.
“I am impressed with the turnout.
“I am impressed with the good and orderly conduct of the election.”
Atunwa said that the police officers deployed to the polling centres showed a great deal of professionalism.
The speaker commended the state electoral body for its timely distribution of election materials, which he said also contributed to the success of the exercise.
