The Kano State Government says it has elevated 72 school Principals to Directors in its commitment to improve the welfare of teachers in the state.
The state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, made this known when he received the state’s branch of Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, who visited him on Wednesday in Kano.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr, Nasiru Gawuna, said the administration had remained committed to the provision of qualitative education.
The state has more than 1,200 secondary schools.
Ganduje said the state’s 14 zonal education offices manned by Deputy Directors were elevated to Zonal Directorates, which paved the way for the heads to become substantive directors.
He added: “Recently, the current administration distributed working materials worth over N1 billion to secondary schools and raised the boarding secondary schools’ weekly feeding allowance to N34 million from N31 million.
“The welfare of the teachers was given due priority.
“Apart from the timely payment of workers’ salaries, the administration has promoted over 8,000 teachers in the past three years.”
Ganduje said the state government would support any move aimed at improving the education sector and commended teachers and other civil servants for their dedication to duty.
Earlier, Alhaji Ahmed Haruna, President of All Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, Kano Branch, said they were at the Government House to express their profound appreciation to the governor for the gesture.
The Executive Secretary, Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, Dr. Usaini Umar, also lauded Ganduje for the board’s numerous achievements in the schools.
Umar said the problems of toilet evacuation in boarding schools was over, adding that majority of the schools now have upgraded kitchens, model conference centres, among others.
