Ahead of the commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day on June 12, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has urged President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate his commitment to democratic ideals by promoting human rights and ordering the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the leader of MASSOB, Uchenna Madu, said that releasing Kanu would contribute significantly to national healing and unity, while also fostering better relations between the federal government and various ethnic groups, particularly in the Southeast.
Madu explained that the appeal is anchored on key democratic values and principles of the rule of law.
“MASSOB believes that releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will open the door for meaningful dialogue aimed at addressing the long-standing grievances of the southeastern region, especially regarding self-determination and calls for greater autonomy,” he said.
Madu further noted that the appeal comes at a symbolic moment in Nigeria’s history—June 12— a date that embodies the spirit of democracy and the values of freedom, justice, and equity.

“Our call for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release echoes the sentiments of many individuals and organizations across Igbo land, Nigeria, and the global community who view his release as a critical step toward resolving broader political and social challenges,” the statement read.
MASSOB emphasized that the appeal reflects a wider aspiration for justice and the recognition of the rights of the Biafran people within the Nigerian federation.
“The outcome of this appeal may significantly influence future dialogue between the federal government and various ethnic nationalities in Nigeria,” Madu added.
