Hon. Kayode Oladele, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes and member representing Yewa North and Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, has commended the Federal Government for the decision to formally recognise late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola as the winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election and to further make June 12 the new Democracy Day in the country.
Contributing on the floor of the House on a motion to commend the Federal Government on the declaration, the lawmaker, who was also at the forefront of the pro-democracy struggles and actualization of June 12 at all relevant times, also noted that although this ultimate recognition of June 12 by the Nigerian government was long overdue, President Muhammadu Buhari still deserves all the credit for finding the courage to do what is right.
The significance of June 12, 1993 is not only that it represented the freest, fairest and most peaceful presidential election in Nigerian history, but also because it was a day in which various nationalities making up Nigeria, the Nigerian people demonstrated the willingness and readiness to act and speak in one voice to elect their president irrespective of our tribal and religious diversity.
Oladele however appealed to the Gederal Government to similarly recognise all other heroes of June 12 actualization struggle, notable among whom were Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti, Pa Alfred Riwane, Pa Adekunle Ajasin, Pa Abraham Adesanya, Chief Cornelius Adebayo and other martyrs of June 12.
