The Action Congress of Nigeria has described the planned visit of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to Lagos State on Thursday (tomorrow) as an attempt to frustrate the merger plans of four opposition parties in the state.
The ACN, which is seen as the principal party in the merger, is scheduled to hold its National Convention on Thursday, same day Jonathan is scheduled to visit Lagos.
Top on the agenda of the National Convention is the ratification of the merger plans.
The National Convention Planning Committee of the ACN on Wednesday said the timing of Jonathan’s visit and the attendant disruption of traffic expected to come with it, will only be seen as a continuation of the attempt to frustrate the merger plan by the Peoples Democratic Party.
In a letter to the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, the National Convention Planning Committee said Jonathan should be prevailed upon to either postpone the visit of find alternative means of moving around the state to reduce traffic bottlenecks usually associated with such presidential movement.
The letter, signed by a member of the National Convention Planning Committee, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said if Jonathan insists on going ahead with the trip as originally planned, it could lead to frustration among members of the party who would have travelled to Lagos from different parts of the country and caught in traffic gridlock.
The party said since the National Convention had been made public before the announcement of the presidential visit, the logical thing to do would be for Jonathan to reschedule his visit or modify his movement plans.
The party therefore told Fashola in the letter to reach out to Jonathan to either postpone the visit or make alternative plans for his movement around the city in a way that would not lead to traffic gridlock.
The ACN, Congress for Progressive Change, All Nigeria Peoples Party and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance are involved in the merger plan.
The CPC has fixed its National Convention for May 11 for the ratification of the merger.
