The President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has vowed to tackle flooding, which is currently ravaging at least 15 of the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Jonathan, in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday morning, said that the Federal Government was concerned about the development, which has left no fewer than 150 persons dead and several thousands displaced.
The President said funds have been allocated to states and some federal ministries and parastatals to tackle the issue.
Among the ministries that have been mobilised to tackle the flooding menace are the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of the Environment.
The National Emergency Management Agency and the National Commission for Refugees are also to be funded to tackle the flooding challenge.
Jonathan also announced the setting up of a committee to provide relief and rehabilitation for and to those affected by the flooding.
The committee, tagged Committee on flood relief and rehabilitation, will be co-chaired by business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; and constitutional lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.
The Chairman of Globacom, Otunba Mike Adenuga, will also play a key role in the committee.
Jonathan said: “This Administration remains fully committed to the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerians.”
