Apparently still enraged about the personal letter that former President Olusegun Obasanjo wrote to him but leaked to the press, President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday said Obasanjo and his likes don’t own Nigeria.
Speaking at the Christmas Day Service held at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life Camp, Abuja, President Jonathan said the future of Nigeria is in the hands of the clergymen, enjoining them to save the country.
Former President Obasanjo, had in a controversial 18-page letter titled: “Before It Is Too Late,” accused President Jonathan of a plot to assassinate political opponents who have allegedly been put on a watch list, promoting corruption and destroying the PDP among other things.
Though Jonathan had replied Obasanjo, denying the allegations leveled against him and accusing the former president of setting the stage for subversion, he also used the Christmas service on Wednesday in Abuja to again express dismay at people in high places writing letters they ought not to write.
The President insisted the country belongs to traditional rulers, religious leaders, women, youths and not any politician or the political class.
He, therefore, urged religious leaders to save the country from politicians by intensifying prayers.
According to him: “For us at this time, especially before we the politicians that we think we own this country will begin to think about our next election and doing what we ought not to do, making statements we are supposed not to make, writing letters we are not supposed not write, I call on the clergy men and statesmen who really own this country, because this country belongs to our statesmen, the traditional rulers, our religious leaders and men and women and youths.
“Nigeria doesn’t belong to any politician or group of politicians.
“So, we will continue to urge you to continue to pray for this country.
“So, I urge you to continue to pray.
“I also thank the religious leaders of this country.
“They have been praying and I believe God has been hearing our prayers.
“We will do our best within the period that God has asked us to occupy the positions we are occupying.”
Present at the service were the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan; the President’s mother, Madam Eunice Jonathan; ministers; presidential aides; and top government functionaries.
