President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday praised the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, for his wise and competent leadership.
He said such qualities had prevented terrorists from establishing firm roots in the state.
Jonathan made the remarks in Abuja when a delegation from the Emir led by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Dan Majen Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, visited him at the Presidential Villa.
He said the nation owed the emir a huge debt of gratitude for his efforts.
Jonathan said that Bayero’s efforts had greatly helped to prevent Kano’s large population of youths from falling under the influence of extremists.
He restated his condemnation of the recent terrorist attack on the traditional ruler, describing it as “most reprehensible’’.
“We thank God Almighty for sparing his life.
“We will continue to pray that God should grant him many more years of fruitful service to the people of Kano and Nigeria.’’
Jonathan described Bayero as one of the most decent and respectable Nigerians he has interacted with, and said that his successful rulership of Kano for more than 50 years was quite significant and worthy of celebration.
Earlier, Sanusi had said that they were at the Villa to convey the appreciation of the Emir to the President for his support and representation at the recent celebrations his 50th year on the throne.
“The Emir greatly appreciated President Jonathan’s interest, support, goodwill and representation at all the major events organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ascension to the throne of the Emirate of Kano.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sanusi delivered a personal letter of appreciation from Bayero to Jonathan.
Members of the delegation included Prince Ahmed Ado Bayero, Malam Abdulqadir Mustafa and Malam Munir Sanusi.
