President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has congratulated the French President-elect, Francois Hollande, on his victory in Sunday’s run-off presidential election.
Jonathan also saluted the people of France on the success of the election, which he described as not only a triumph of democracy but also a clear testimony to the maturity and age-long tradition of democracy in France.
In a statement by his spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, Jonathan said he looks forward to working with Hollande and his incoming government to further strengthen the cordial and mutually-beneficial relations between Nigeria and France.
The statement added: “The President expects that under Mr. Hollande’s leadership, France will remain a strong supporter of global action to promote democracy, good governance and rapid socio-economic development in Africa.
“As he prepares to formally assume office in a few days’ time, President Jonathan assures Mr. Hollande that Nigeria will continue to work with France in the quest for peace, political stability and prosperity in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the rest of Africa and other under-developed nations of the world.
“President Jonathan wishes Mr. Hollande a very successful tenure in the service of the people of France.”
