The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has appointed the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, as the Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
The appointment is coming as a compensation for Tukur who resigned as the national chairman of the PDP after a lot of pressure.
Tukur had said he would not resign.
But he eventually did on Wednesday ahead of the National Executive Committee meeting of the party on Thursday where he could have been sacked if he had not resigned.
Jonathan was said to have prevailed on him to resign.
A statement on Tuesday from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, confirmed the development.
The statement, signed by Anyim’s media aide, Sam Nwaobasi, also conveyed the appointment of Alhaji Ismaila Bello as the Director General of the National Population Commission.
Bello’s appointment took effect from January 8, 2014.
Tukur will be replacing a former acting National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, as the chairman of the Board of the NRC.
Kawu resigned in protest as a result of disagreement with the PDP.
He was the National chairman of the New PDP while it lasted.
A larger chunk of the nPDP has since fused into the APC.
