The meeting between President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities over the continued closure of Nigerian universities has commenced.
The meeting, which started at 2:38pm, is holding at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
It is being held at the First Lady’s Wing of the Villa.
Those at the meeting on the side of the Federal Government delegation apart from Jonathan include the Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; Jonathan’s Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Oghiadome; the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike; the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu; the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie.
The ASUU team is led by its President, Dr. Isa Fagge.
Also on the side of ASUU as Dr. Dipo Fasina; the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwaheed Omar; Prof. Festus Iyayi; Prof. Suleiman Abdul; and Prof. Abdullahi Sule-Kano.
Prior to the meeting with Jonathan, the ASUU team had met with the leadership of the Senate, led by the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark.
Jonathan had also before the meeting, as reported by The Eagle Online, met earlier in the day with Sambo, Wike and Wogu.
It will be recalled that Sambo took over the negotiation with ASUU in September when the initial team, headed by Anyim, did not make any progress.
A visibly elated Jonathan had this to say on arrival at the First Lady’s Wing of the Villa where the meeting is taking place: “My president (shaking hands with Fagge), I hope it will be over today.
“Our children must go back to school.”
