President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Barrister Godswill Akpabio, have supported the Nigeria movie industry with N3.5 billion.
Jonathan and Akpabio made the donation at a forum held in honour of the movie industry in Nigeria last weekend.
It was specifically to celebrate 20 years of Nollywood.
President Jonathan, who donated N3 billion, said he has decided to be more responsive to the entertainment industry, with special preference for Nollywood.
He said the industry remains one of the country’s biggest commodity for export.
Notable guests at the event included Genevieve Nnaji, Chidi Mokeme, Ibinabo Fiberesima, Aki and Paw Paw, Olu and Joke Jacobs, Zack Orji, Stephanie Linus and Patience Ozokwor.
Others included Prince Jide Kosoko, Bukky Wright, Desmond Elliot, Kunle Afolayan, Adebayo Salami, Tunde Kelani, Amaka Igwe and Madam Kofo.
Akpabio also promised to finance Nollywood with a N50 million ‘President Goodluck Jonathan Prize Award’ for the best Nollywood actors, actresses, film maker and other categories of awards.
Jonathan unveiled a pictorial book titled: Icons of Nollywood.
He did the unveiling with his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, and top government functionaries.
