Veteran journalist and columnist, High Chief Tola Adeniyi, has revealed that a retired Nigerian Army General, David Medayese Jemibewon, also played a role in the setting free of former Military Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo, when late General Sani Abacha wanted to kill him.
He said this following the expression of surprise by Obasanjo that former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, pleaded for him.
General Gowon had revealed at his 90th birthday celebration that he sent his wife, Victoria, to Abacha with a letter pleading for Obasanjo’s life to be spared after the phantom coup in which he was found guilty.
Adeniyi, however, said it was not only Gowon that Obasanjo should thank.
The former Editor of Sunday Times said Obasanjo should also search out Jemibewon, a former Minister of Police Affairs, for thanks.

He said in response to the story on Gowon published by The Eagle Online: “Obasanjo should seek out General David Medayese Jemibewon to publicly acknowledge his (Jemibewon’s) role in saving his life.
“Jemibewon visited several major leaders in the UK including the British Parliament to plead for Obasanjo’s release.
“He also visited Emir Ado Bayero and other key figures in the Northern establishment who were holidaying in the UK in 1995.”
