Tragedy on Tuesday hit the home of a former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Onenefe Ibori, as three prominent chiefs were roasted beyond recognition in an auto crash.
The chiefs, who were identified as Vincent Majemite, a retired police officer; Barrister Takpor; and John Akponene, were said to be travelling to Asaba for an undisclosed meeting.
Though details of the report were sketchy as at press time, an eyewitness account said the Prado Jeep they were riding in suddenly lost one its tyres, a few meters away from Okhue River and somersaulted several times before going up in flames.
Okhue River is in Orhionwon Local Government Area of Edo State.
All efforts by passers-by and sympathizers to rescue the victims could not yield any positive result.
“The most painful aspect of the accident was not that the Jeep they were traveling in was gutted by fire, but that they were burnt beyond recognition,” a sympathizer said.
It would be recalled that seven prominent chiefs of the kingdom died in the same manner along Okhue River six years ago.
