The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has disclosed that it is going to be difficult to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the Electoral (Amendment) bill.
President Buhari had vetoed National Assembly on Electoral (Amendment) Bill, citing reasons for doing so in letters to the Senate and the House of Representatives.
However, speaking after plenary session on Tuesday, the Deputy Senate President said the Senate may not be able to get the number to override the the President’s veto on Electoral (Amendment) bill.
He added that election is not going to end today or tomorrow, so there is need for these improvements.
He said: “As it is today. there is nothing we can do.
“Basically we say we are going to override the President’s veto?
“It’s not about supporting it.
“I don’t want grand standing.
“We may not have the numbers and I don’t want anything that will divide this legislative house. so we just have to take things as it is and hope that as we return, we will be able to pass it again.
“Elections are not going to end today or tomorrow and we still need some of these improvements in our electoral process.
“I am not speaking for the National Assembly.
“If the process brings it up (overriding the President’s veto), I don’t have a problem with that.
“My thinking is that it’s going to be difficult to get the numbers.”
