Andrew Parsons, the President of the International Paralympic Committee, has expressed shock and sadness following the passing on of Patrick Baumann, the Secretary General of the International Basketball Federation.
Baumann, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee, was a prominent figure within global sport holding multiple positions.
The 51-year-old died of a heart attack at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday.
The IPC said on its website, Parsons condoled with his family, FIBA and IOC on the sudden death of the former basketball player.
He said: “Having only recently been in contact with Patrick at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires, it is a great shock to learn of his sad and untimely passing.
“Patrick was hugely passionate about all sports. As a result of his FIBA role, he was a great supporter and advocate for wheelchair basketball.
“He was arguably one of the most influential administrators in world sport and will be sadly missed.
“On behalf of the IPC and the whole Paralympic Movement, I would like to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to Patrick’s family, friends and colleagues.”
Baumann was elected as a Council member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations in 2011 and re-elected in 2015.
He was elected as President of the Global Association of International Sports Federations in 2016; and as President of SportAccord in 2017.
