The International Olympic Committee on Thursday announced the opening of the bidding processes for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games and the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2020.
In a statement on its website, the world sports body said the bidding process for the XXIV Olympic Winter Games of 2022 whose deadline is November 14 will feature two phases.
The News Agency of Nigeria quoted the statement as saying that the phases are the candidature acceptance procedure and the candidature procedure.
It said that the process would be concluded with the election of the 2022 host city during the 127th IOC Session, billed for Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015.
It added that each of its National Olympic Committees can nominate one city to enter the bidding process by the deadline date.
The statement said: “Phase one involves a thorough review by the IOC of each city’s potential to organise the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
“Cities will be asked to reply to a questionnaire, and their answers will be studied by the IOC to help the IOC Executive Board select the cities that will move on to Phase Two as Candidate Cities.
“The questionnaire to which the Applicant Cities must respond, as well as all relevant information and deadlines related to the first phase of the 2022 bid process, can be found in the 2022 Candidature Acceptance Procedure.
“In Phase Two, Candidate Cities will be requested to detail their Olympic projects in their Candidature File and prepare for the visit of the IOC Evaluation Commission.
“The Evaluation Commission will make a detailed technical risk assessment of each candidature and publish a report in time for the Candidate City Briefing to IOC Members.”
It said also that the bidding process for the third edition of the Winter YOG in 2020 would end with the election of the host city in May or June 2015.
“Each NOC can nominate one city to enter the bidding process by the deadline of November 28, 2013,” the IOC statement said.
