The Imo State Government has announced June 26, 2014 as the deadline for mechanics operating within Owerri, the state capital, to relocate to two mechanics clusters designated by the government.
The two mechanics clusters, established more than 34 years ago at the suburb of Owerri by the first civilian administration in Imo State, are Orji and Nekede Mechanics Villages.
Ugochi Nnanna-Okoro, the state Commissioner for Industry and Non-Formal Sector, in a statement issued in Owerri on Thursday, stressed that the government would not tolerate further operations of mechanics within the state capital.
The statement, signed by Kennedy Amanze, the Public Relations Officer of the ministry, quoted the commissioner as saying that government had approved additional space at Orji Mechanics Village to accommodate more mechanics.
Nnanna-Okoro warned that any mechanic who failed to take advantage of the grace period would face the full wrath of government.
She also warned property owners against allowing mechanics to operate within their premises, adding: “Any plot owner in Owerri that allows mechanics to operate on his/her space would have the property revoked.”
The commissioner said that the indiscriminate abandonment of broken down vehicles defaced the aesthetics of the capital.
“Owners of such vehicles that are parked within Owerri should intensify effort to remove the vehicles because government had already inaugurated a task force to impound such vehicles,” the statement said.
Nnanna-Okoro, who recently visited Orji Mechanic Village on a sensitisation tour, hinted that the government would soon construct an ultra-modern permanent mechanics cluster.
