Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo says his administration has paid N2.111 billion as compensation to owners of lands acquired by the administration for developmental purposes.
The disclosure was made in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sam Onwuemeodo in Owerri on Friday.
Okorocha disclosed this while presenting the 2019 Budget to the Imo House of Assembly in Owerri.
The governor said the payments made to owners of lands acquired at Irete, Orji, Avu, New Arugo, among others, included traditional rites and compensatory plots.
According to the governor, N233.3 million has also been set aside to pay other land owners for various land acquisitions in the state by the government.
He added that arrangements had been completed for the establishment of an Industrial Park at Ohaji Egbema and an Industrial Estate at Ngor Okpala, assuring that all the projects would be completed in 2019.
Okorocha also said that his administration acquired 215 hectares of land at Ngor Okpala for the establishment of Air Force Base and 50 hectares at Uborji Okuku in Owerri West Local Government Area for the establishment of a mega city.
He said that 700 hectares were re-acquired from land owners of Avu, Nekede, Obinze and Ihiagwa for the development of Imo Centenary City on Port-Harcourt Road, Owerri.
The governor disclosed that the government also re-acquired land for the relocation of the Police Headquarters to Port-Harcourt Road and another land at Avu for the relocation of mechanics in Owerri.
He added that the projects had reached advanced stages.
He said all the lands were acquired for various developmental purposes to boost the state’s economy and enable the government to implement the Rescue Mission Urban and Regional Development policy.
