The National President of the Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Peter Timothy Ibifa, has been abducted in Port Harcourt by yet-unknown gunmen.
Ibifa was said to have been waylaid and abducted by heavily armed men on Wednesday along the popular Obiri Ikwere axis of East West Road on his way from the Port Harcourt International Airport to the venue of a scheduled meeting with the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.
The incident came less than three hours after Ijaw youths protested at the Bayelsa State liaison office of the Niger Delta Development Commission and at the popular Mbiama junction.
IYC publicity secretary, Ebilade Ekerefe, confirmed the incident, and called on the security agencies to move quickly to effect the unconditional release of the IYC president.
The IYC Worldwide had earlier in the day barricaded the Bayelsa liaison office of the NDDC and the Mbiama-axis of the East-West road for the refusal of the Federal Government to inaugurate a substantive board of the NDDC.
It had earlier issued a 30-day ultimatum, which expired on May 25th, for the Federal Government and the Ministry of the Niger Delta Affairs to constitute the board or risk total shutdown of the Niger Delta.
