President Muhammadu Buhari has said he inherited a country that was materially and morally vandalised.
Buhari, who was answering questions on Friday on why his administration was slow with the development of infrastructure, said the money was not there to embark on projects.
He said there was no where for the government to get the money to develop infrastructure.
He said when his administration came into power, the government could not afford to pay salaries.
He said the situation degenerated to a level that the Federal Government had to help 27 of the 36 states to pay salaries.
Buhari, who spoke with the Nigerian Television Authority and Channels Television in New Delhi, India, where he attended the 3rd India-Africa Summit, said: “Where is the money?
“You must have known that the Federal Government had to help 27 of the 36 states to pay salaries.
“Nigeria cannot pay salaries.
“The Federal Government itself had to summon the governor of the Central Bank to see how it would pay salaries not to talk of the agreements we signed with foreign countries, counterpart funding and so on.
“This country was materially vandalised and morally so and you are in a position to know even more than myself unless you are testing my knowledge whether I know it or not.”
Asked if the country was broke, Buhari said: “Of course, Nigeria is broke.”
