Electricity still remains a great problem, a challenge, perhaps, the greatest artificial problem and impediment to our economic greatness here in Nigeria. With over 170 million people, over 10 million homes, about 100 thousand large scale industries, the 4500 thousand mega watts produce by Nigeria is totally in adequate for our optimal development considered to other developing countries like South Africa that produces over 40 thousand mega watts, Iran, about 50 thousand mega watts etc.
Quiet different from others, Nigeria has a potential to generate over 100 thousand mega watts before 2020 if emergency will declared on the sector, all the available and affordable sources of generating power in Nigeria could be harnessed, and if corruption in the sector will be eradicated.
Among the available forms God endowed Nigeria with – and can be harnessed to maximum potential include; Hydro power – available in Kainji, river Niger in Niger state (power state), Kashimbila in Taraba state, and river Benue in Benue state. This according expert if put into maximum usage can generate over 10 thousand mega watts.
Secondly is the coal. The large amount of coal deposits in Kogi, Nasarawa and some part of Abia if put into usage with all technical support can produce over 5 thousand mega watts daily for over 35 years.
Also come the most available and much more reliable, green (nature) friendly, and fast developing source of energy, the solar energy. Since we are in the equator where the Sun rise and fall obliquely, Solar power if harnessed in the. Entire Northern Nigeria, more specifically the North Western state of. Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Jigawa, over 20 thousand mega watts can be produced daily and for ever – with improvement every year as the technology is improved.
The wind is there is abundance, the high hill state like Jos, kaduna Niger, Ebonyi will surely find it useful and affordable. That too will produce a lot of power for our usage.
The bio gas is under development in Nigeria. States with a lot of people like Lagos, Oyo and Kano, and animals may use it for rural electrification. That may solve their little domestic requirement for some time.
The Nuclear energy I’d well developed in Nigeria will surely solve all over power problem. Nuclear deposit is found in significant amount in Gombe, some part of Bauchi, Yobe and Taraba, that will be of use to use. Besides our neighbour Niger Republic is having some of the most significant deposit you can find in the world. We can do trade by batter. Give us Uranium and we will give you energy. I think is fair and wise.
The gas energy if harnessed well, can light the entire Niger Delta region. In fact, even some Igbo states may have some courtesy from it.
All that and many more can be possible before 2020 if the federal government declare emergency on the sector, make it its second priority after security, ensure transparency and get reed of corruption in the sector, and get all the necessary requirements needed for that to happen including making a robust national law that will regulate power wastage and destruction.
With that, Nigeria can even sell energy to neighboring state like Niger, Togo, or even the entire West Africa as its total power generation now is little less than 60 thousand mega watts combined. With 100 thousand mega watts, Nigeria will then be the Hub of power supply and generation In Africa, perhaps, among the first 20 in the world.
But for that to happen, all the 3 tier of government must start working tomorrow with the hope to achieve that, and more importantly, the President should appoint me the National tomorrow morning. (Laughing out loud).
