A 26-year-old housemaid, Bose Uwi, and four others, who allegedly stole jewellery valued at N20 million, on Thursday appeared before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.
The others are Damilare Abayomi, 27; Kodo Garuba, 25; Abdulahi Garuba, 64; and Adamu Daura, 62.
The housemaid was arraigned for conspiracy and stealing, while the others were charged with conspiracy and receiving stolen property.
The Prosecutor, ASP Felix Ifijen, told the court that Uwi, who worked for Temilola Olasehinde, connived with Abayomi to steal the jewellery belonging to Olasehinde.
According to him, Uwi entered into Olasehinde’s room and stole a case containing gold necklaces and earrings, which she later gave to Abayomi.
Ifijen said that the theft occurred on April 15, at 13, Sodipe Street, Yaba.
Ifijen said: “Abayomi then took the stolen items to three gold merchants transacting business unlawfully opposite Super Plaza, Shitta, Surulere, Lagos.
“Abayomi proceeded to give Abdullahi Garuba, Kodo Garuba and Adamu Daura the stolen items, which they accepted , having reasons to believe that they were stolen.”
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 166, 285 and 326 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stealing attracts three years imprisonment, while receiving stolen property is punishable with 14 years imprisonment.
All the accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Philip Ojo, granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 and two sureties each and adjourned the case till July 14 for trial.
