Gunmen on Monday shot dead three policemen in Kusada Local Government Area of Katsina State.
An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that the incident occurred at the border area between Kano and Katsina States in Gidan-mutum-daya town.
The eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the gunmen arrived at about 11am on a motorcycle and opened fire on the policemen at the checkpoint.
According to him, one policeman was killed on the spot, while the remaining policemen ran into the bush.
The eyewitness said another set of gunmen in another vehicle pursued the fleeing policemen and killed two of them.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Aminu Sadiq, confirmed the incident and told NAN: “We lost three of our men from Kusada Division who were on a stop and search duty.
“Four gunmen on motorcycles came out from the bush and began to shoot our men.
“Another vehicle also arrived and opened fire at the police at the same time killing three of them.”
Sadiq, who said no arrest had been made, added that the police authorities suspect that the attackers could be cattle rustlers.
