The Police say five people died after gunmen ambushed a van carrying money to a state treasury in Nigeria’s restive North East.
The spokesman, Borno State Police Command, Samuel Tizhe, says the assailants shot dead two police officers and a bank worker on Tuesday who were travelling in an armoured van from Maiduguri to Damaturu, cities about 130km apart.
Tizhe says policemen guarding the van killed two suspected robbers in the attack, and that the robbers injured three more people before escaping with “a huge sum of money”.
Maiduguri is the spiritual home of a feared Islamist sect locally known as Boko Haram, which has launched a bloody campaign of killings and bombings in Nigeria.
Tizhe says there were no clear indications the group was involved.
