As the United States NBA Basketball African League (BAL) kicks off today in Kigali, Rwanda, the immediate-past Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has emphasized the need for more youth-focused programmes that will positively impact the economy.
In a series of tweets on his verified @BukolaSaraki handle, the former Kwara State Governor emphasized that government must continue to prioritize programmes and policies that will provide opportunities for talented young Africans.
He said, “As an avid basketball fan and someone who strongly believes in the potential of the African youth, watching the Basketball Africa League (@theBAL) grow from an idea to what promises to be an electrifying tournament has been exciting.
“I commend the @NBA and @FIBA for their vision, and for working with stakeholders and sporting enthusiasts across the continent to bring this highly-anticipated tournament to life.
“The @NBA’s investment in this league which will develop basketball on the continent; boost the sporting economy, and grow new talents — reiterates why we must prioritize investing in the talent and potential of our young people.
