The Niger State Governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has signed the 2015 appropriation act passed by the House of Assembly last week into law.
The House approved a total of N80,815 402,545 out of which N42,164,221 001 is for recurrent expenditure and N38,651,181,544 is for capital estimates.
Governor Aliyu, while signing the document into law, directed the Ministry of Finance and the state Planning Commission to ensure strictness in the disbursement of funds for the execution of projects.
According to him: “Nobody should spend money in anticipation of money from the Federation Account.
“The payment of salaries should be priority of the administration.
“I believe the only way to fight corruption in the civil service is to ensure prompt payment of salary, adding: “We expect much from our civil servant, but we must give them their right.”
Furthermore, Aliyu promised that his administration will continue to pay pensions and gratuities and directed the Pensions Board to immediately plug all the loopholes discovered in the payment of pensions to local government retirees.
He also said that as a result of the decline in the income from the Federation Account, the government will assist local and big time farmers to acquire soft loans to boost their production and consequently their income.
Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Usman, had admonished Ministries and Government Departments to cut all areas of wastage and strive to improve on the generation of Internally Generated Revenue.
Usman said: “The present economic situation has reminded us once again that we cannot depend on oil revenue alone as a nation, neither can we depend on federal allocation as a state.
“The signs are obvious: we must develop our institutions and sectors that have capacity to give us financial leverage as a state.”
