Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is voluntarily recalling about 41,000 of its Wrangler Silent Armor tyres, Reuters reported.
The recall covers Wrangler Silent Armor tire sizes LT235/80R17 LRE, LT325/60R18 LRE, LT275/70R18 LRE, LT265/70R17 LRE, LT245/75R17 LRE AND LT285/70R17 LRD that were produced from March 31 through May 31, 2009, UPI reported.
The tyres are designed for pickup trucks, vans and sport-utility vehicles used at construction sites or for off-road driving, according to Reuters.
The company estimates that about 27,000 tyres are still on the road.
Goodyear said an internal review of early warning data indicated the tyres might tear, Cleveland’s Fox 8 News reported.
“Partial tread separation could lead to vehicle damage when the separated tread strikes the vehicle,” the company explained, according to Fox 8 News. “A tread separation could also cause tyre failure that could result in a motor vehicle crash.”
Last year, two people in Texas died when a car equipped with the tyres rolled over, Reuters reported.
Goodyear will notify owners and replace the tyres for free, UPI reported.
The safety recall is expected to start on or before March 22, 2012, according to Fox 8 News.
