Sixteen-year-old, Chika Amalaha has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The Rivers State-born athlete lifted a total of 169kg to set a new Commonwealth Games record in the Women’s 53kg weightlifting category.
The Nigerian girl upset favourite, Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea, and S. Matsa from India to the second and third places respectively.
Papua New Guinea’s Toua lifted a total 193kg, which is also a new record at the games, while India’s Matsa won the bronze medal with 188kg in the snatch, clean and jerk event.
Nigeria moved to the seventh spot on the medal standing, with one gold and one bronze in its kitty.
