The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has directed all the formations covering the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to commence the arrest and prosecution of motorists driving against traffic.
Dr. Kayode Olagunju, the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Policy, Research and Statistics at the Corps’ National headquarters in Abuja, made the disclosure during an inspection of the highway on Wednesday.
Olagunju, who led a team of the FRSC, officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing and the two construction firms handling the reconstruction of the highway, said the inspection was to avert accidents and gridlock on the road.
He said: “This trip is to ensure that the construction companies comply with the safety standards as regards proper management of construction sites.
“We have identified areas that require emergency repairs.
“We believe that emergency repairs on those portions will ease gridlock and check road crashes..
“We will prosecute impatient drivers who drive against traffic because the road will be repaired and there will be proper traffic signs.
“The FRSC Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi, has also directed all the commands along this road to ensure that those that drive against traffic on this road are arrested and prosecuted.”
All the areas requiring urgent attention on the highway were identified and the contractors, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and the Reynolds Construction Company, were directed to embark on emergency repairs.
The team made stops on the various construction zones from Lagos to Ibadan, pointing out problems on both the Lagos and Ibadan bound carriageways.
The construction firms were also directed to ensure that they used proper signage and warnings to alert road users at construction zones on a round-the-clock basis.
Kayode Ibrahim, the Engineer-in-Charge of Section One, which spans from Lagos to the Sagamu Interchange, being handled by Julius Berger, promised that his team would move to site on Wednesday to begin work on the shoulders of the road.
Also, Nelson Olubakinde, the Engineer-in-Charge of Section Two, which is being handled by the RCC, promised to begin the immediate filling of pot holes from Ibadan to the Sagamu Interchange.
