The Borno State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps said on Friday in Maiduguri that 34 persons had so far died in 13 road crashes in the state in 2016, according to Shehu Illiyasu, the Sector Commandant of the Corps.
Illiyasu, who disclosed this while answering questions from reporters in Maiduguri, said 29 persons were injured, while 50 others were rescued from crash scenes in the state between February and November, 2016.
The Commandant, however, attributed most of the road mishaps to the non-challant attitude of road users and speeding.
Illiyasu said: “You know we are in the post-insurgency era and people had become used to lawlessness.
“We have conducted road sensitisation campaigns in many motor parks in the state on the need for commercial motorists to be safety conscious on the roads.
“We will continue to collaborate with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to organise health talks and public enlghtment activities for motorists and tricycle operators on the dangers of drug use, while driving.
“We have discovered that some commercial motorists and tricycle operators use illicit drugs and constitute a great threat to the lives of both their passengers and other road users.
“They honestly need to be adequately enlightened on the effects of drug abuse.”
