The Federal Road Safety Corps says it recorded 2,658 deaths in 4,809 crashes in the first half of 2016.
This was contained in the FRSC’s Road Traffic Crashes January to June report made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.
The report says that the crashes, which involved 31,701 people, occurred in different parts of the country.
It said: “In January 886 crashes were recorded involving 6,191 people, killing 529 people and injuring 2,999.
“In February it reduced to 738 crashes, involving 4,894 people, 496 deaths and 2,475 injured.

The report shows that the accident trend declined as the months proceded because of the measures the commission put in place to curb crashes.
It urged Nigerians to obey traffic rules and regulations because it was their disobedience that resulted in these crashes.
It said: “These are not just figures or number, they are human lives we are talking about here.”
The report says that 3,3756 traffic offenders were arrested in January, while 37,440 offences were committed while in February, 40,175 traffic offenders were arrested and 44,798 offences were committed.
It revealed that 50,798 traffic offenders were arrested in March and 56,300 traffic offences were committed.
The report indicated that there was a reduction in April as compared to March as 38,714 traffic offenders were arrested and 42,764 offences committed.
May recorded 51,520 traffic offenders arrested and 57134 offences committed, while in June 51, 966 traffic offenders were arrested and 57,690 offences were committed.
It added: “This brought the total to 266,929 traffic offenders arrested and 296,126 traffic offences committed from January to June 2016.
“During this period, 50,660,065 passengers travelled within the country and 4,992,027 numbers of vehicles travelled and 25,782 luxury buses travelled across the country.”
The report, however, appealed to all Nigerians to joins hands with the FRSC to reduce road crashes.
It said this will enable the FRSC achieve the UN decade of action for road safety because road safety is a shared responsibility.
