The Customs Area Controller, Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘C’ Owerri, Comptroller Mohammed Garba, has advised officers and men of the unit to re-strategise their operations against smugglers and their cohorts.
A statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Owerri on Saturday by the Public Relations Officer, Ifeoma Onuigbo, noted that Garba stated this while addressing officers and men of the FOU Zone ‘C’, Owerri.
He urged officers and men of the unit to display professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The controller advised the officers to be prepared for the onslaught against smugglers of contraband into the country.
Garba said it had become more imperative for the Customs Service to re-strategise its operations against the sharp unpatriotic practices of smugglers and their cohorts.
He said it was also needful for the service to neutralise the antics of those still engrossed in the illicit business.
The controller commended officers and men of the unit for the successful celebration of the International Customs Day, an annual event of the service, with the theme: “Data Analysis for Effective Border Management.”
He said the celebration had contributed to trade supply chain, growth of the service and enhancement of business standard and public private enterprises.
Garba expressed delight with the Comptroller-General of Customs, retired Colonel Hammed Ali, and his Management team for empowering the officers to live up to expectations.
He said the men were being inspired and motivated against smuggling of illegal goods into the country.
Garba said: “Our current data base in respect of checkmating anti-smuggling activities by some unpatriotic Nigerians shows that we have continued to acquire stronger fame and credibility in the onslaught against smugglers, their agents and collaborators.
“However, we cannot claim to have reached the goal because it is not yet over until it is over.”
Garba, therefore, urged the officers to redouble their efforts in order to meet the challenges ahead.
He assured them that hard work, efficiency, commitment, dedication and integrity as well as application of professional ethics would not go unrewarded.
He also advised them to remain committed to their official duties in spite of all odds.
The controller urged officers and men of the unit to report perceived hindrances facing the performance of their duties to the appropriate high officers for necessary action.
